Speak and Share-Adult Natural Hair Styles- Wash & Go

Submitted by Christina of IL

1.  How long have you been all natural (without any chemicals remaining in your hair)?

I have been all natural since late 2007, I cannot remember the exact month now.  In 2005, I stopped getting relaxers and began transitioning my hair.  By 2007, the remaining relaxed hair was cut.

2.  Speak about who or what inspired you to go natural.

I decided to go natural after hair my hair began shedding frequently.  Also, I noticed my hair was getting thinner.  I was taking care of my hair and it was still shedding and getting thinner.  These changes prompted me to just go natural to see if any changes would occur.

3.  What are your top 2 hairstyles since going natural?

When it comes to hair, I choose the quickest hairstyles.  One of my favorite hairstyles is the afro pony tail.  Honestly I have always been a pony tail girl so the afro pony is a natural fit for me.  Another favorite is the wash and go.  This is definitely my favorite style during the summer months.  I usually like to add hair accessories like decorated hair pins and head bands.

4.  What's your weekly routine and 3 favorite products used on a weekly basis?

I usually cowash my hair 1-2 times a week.  During each wash, I apply conditioner twice.  My favorite conditioners are Suave Naturals juicy green apple and tropical coconut (Thanks for this recommendation Barbara).  Also, I sometimes use V05 Herbal Escapes clarifying conditioner (kiwi lime squeeze scent).  During my last conditioner application, I also apply coconut oil on my scalp and hair.  I let this concoction sit on my hair for about 20-30 minutes, rinse, and then style.

The three products I cannot live without are coconut oil, shea butter, and wide tooth combs.  The coconut gives my hair a beautiful sheen.  I use the shea butter as a gel.  A little water and shea butter does wonders with keeping my hair put.  I can't forget about wide tooth comb to detangle my hair when wet.  I usually use the wide tooth comb immediately after I apply the conditioner.

5.  What's your current length?

I'm not sure.

6.  Speak about your biggest supporters since going natural.

Fortunately I have been surrounded by some loving and supportive people.  All of my family and friends have been very supportive of me going naturally.  They've given me more compliments on my natural hair than on my relaxed hair.

7.  Did anyone discourage you along your natural journey?  If so how did you stay focused on your goal?

No. Thank God.

8.  Name one hairstyle and/ or product that you would like to try?

I would love to try roller or straw setting my hair.  I think the roller and straws sets are so beautiful on natural hair.

9.  If you could speak to people in a word or sentence to describe "Why going natural was a great decision what would you say?  Speak to me!!!!

Freedom to be me!

(Christina is definitely wearing her wash -n-go well.  When she told me that she just added conditioner my jaw dropped.  She has the most defined curls that I've seen in a long time.  Her curls are fab-u-lous!!).

Just speaking-

  1. I’m not usually a fan of V05 products, but this shampoo, which was originally purchased for my daughter, far exceeded my expectations!

Alberto V05 Herbal Escapes Kiwi Lime Squeeze with Lemongrass Extracts can be found at most pharmacies at discount stores and will range in price from about 75 cents to around $2.00. When using this shampoo, the first thing I noticed was the extreme amount of lather that it put off. I love intense lathering action and their “rich lather” claim went far beyond my expectations. The scent is initially very strong, but I found it to be calming. This product rinses clean from the hair and does not leave your hair with a “coated in wax” feeling. It rinsed from my thick hair quickly, and left my scalp feeling especially clean and rejuvenated.

This shampoo does contain products with methyl, but as someone with allergies and hypersensitivities, I did not find this product to be aggravating to those health conditions. Despite the strong scent of kiwi while in the shower, it was barely noticeable after a rinse of conditioner through my hair.

I did not think that I would like this product or ever want to purchase it again, but I was very surprised to find my gleeful pleasure with this shampoo. It left me feeling clean and fresh, not laden with the chemical “rain water” alcohol scent that many other shampoos and conditioners leave behind. I will recommend this product to others and will definitely continue to purchase it for my family. I enjoyed this product enough to try other scents and formulas in its product line.

  2. I've heard quite a few people tell me that they use v05 products. It looks like Christina enjoys the conditioner and you enjoy their shampoo. I also used conditioners in their line. It's been a while and I can't even remember the exact one but it was pink and it smelled great ( I have to search my blog to find the name- smile). I used it to conditioner wash my hair. It was a little thinner than suave, and after a while I got lazy and started using one product for co-washing and as a leave-in conditioner (Suave naturals conditioners). I definitely agree though, V05 is reasonably priced and smells great!!
