I trimmed my hair last Sunday- It's like weeding a garden...

Here's the side view of my hair post trim.  I went into the salon on last week Sunday and asked the stylist to trim it and to even it up some.  The front of my hair was looking too straight for my liking.  I think it's a result of the most recent straightening, using a new brand of henna, and the after effects of wearing my hair pulled back in a bun.  I was tired of the damage around the front.  Also the ends of my hair on the left side were feeling a little rougher than usual.  Anyways I decided to head into the shop for a trim.  I asked the stylist if she could trim it while curly because I really didn't want to deal with heat and any resulting damage (permanent pieces of straight hair after a blow dry and flat iron- nope not today).  Anyways she went ahead and washed my hair and conditioned it.  Then she had me to sit in her chair.  She trimmed quite a bit off.  The owner then came over and told me that I had nice thick hair.  He then asked what products I used when wearing it curly.  I told him shea butter, natural oils, and my tried and true natural gel (Kinky curly curling custard).  He asked if I'd ever tried aveda's becurly and I replied "no".  He went ahead and asked the stylist to try it on my hair.  She tried it but my hair turned out really thick and dry looking.  It's a product that I may have to try at home to figure out the correct amount needed for my hair and also to figure out what conditioner/oil combination if any works best layered underneath it.  It was worth a try.  The shop deals a lot with natural hair, however all of the people that come into the shop wear their hair straight.  I truly believe that I'm the only person that left wearing their hair curly.  I enjoy talking to the stylist though because she asks lots of questions about my routine and I ask lots of questiions about her methods of cutting and general hair care tips.  In life I guess we all learn from each other.  Needless to say I went home, washed my hair with sulfate free shampoo from Trader Joe's and deep conditioned with "Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose" deep conditioner.  I then did a braid out and that was that.  My hair has been trimmed for 9 days and this is what my hair looked like today after a co-wash and braid out on last night.  It's still shrunken, and my curls are really tight.  In a few days, it'll loosen up some and I'll post what it looks like after a few days.  My curls are definitely winding nicely again.  I still have a few straight pieces left around the front, however I figured they can stay for now.  I just know that it will be getting warmer soon and when it's warmer I wash my hair almost daily and need my curls to curl nicely without a bunch of straight pieces.  When I stretch out my curls most of them are at arm pit length (apl) and some are an inch away from it.  If I straightened my hair it would still have length, however I have no desire to straighten anytime soon.  Yep I trimmed my hair and see it just like weeding a garden.  Trim away some of the not so good stuff so that everything else will continue to grow nicely.  Here are a few photos of how it looks after a co-wash.

It was late and I just couldn't get my camera angled to capturer the full length.
Have you trimmed your hair lately?  If so what was the reason? (To remove split ends, to even it up, or to create a new style).

  1. You have really beautiful hair and i am enjoying your Blog. I have stopped putting perm in my hair in hopes of learning to wear it more naturally. It has stopped the breakage but how did/do you get the edges to grow back?

  2. Hi Robin. Thank you for your complement and I'm delighted that you're enjoying my blog. I liked your question so much that it's featured as my question of the day for Thursday Feb. 24, 2011. In short I stopped wearing styles that pulled my hair taut and I also do scalp massages with oils after oiling the ends of my hair on most nights. See the post for Feb 24, 2011 for all the details. Thanks for submitting this question as thinning edges and loss of hair length after years of using chemicals were the main reasons that I decided to go natural. I wish you the best with your natural journey!
