Lessons Learned about Life and Hair- Reflecting on Sunday

Hi curlies,

It's been a while since I've posted an update about my hair.  I've been so busy with children, kids, household duties, work, school, thoughts about what I need to complete, and other obligations, that I have barely had a moment to keep up with everything that life entails daily (Like laundry and dishes- LOL!).  So anyway, I'm happy to have a few minutes to update my blog.  I haven't done anything new with my hair.  Lately it's either the style pictured above or just wearing it all hanging down.  This is a braidout from a week ago.  I've been parting a bang on the left side and just using a clip to secure the back part of my hair.  Oh and I continue to mist my hair with water, conditioner, and oil at least once a week when rebraiding.  It's so easy and convenient.  I can't really call it a protective style because the ends of my hair are out.  I do continue to treat my tresses to some coconut oil and shea butter daily.  This was a photo that I took on Sunday before going to church.

This week I've had some great lessons just from interacting with people on this Sunday.  When I sat down at church I sat next to a young man that was very well dressed and well groomed.  When the pastor got up to speak I noticed that he started to twitch or shake at times and at other times he laughed in an uncontrollable blurted out quick laugh, that was loud and noticeable.  He also coughed at times repetitively.  I did actually glance and just look at him to make sure that he wasn't a danger to himself or to me (The bible says to watch and pray).  He then said "I'm sorry mam".  I replied "Oh, no that's ok".  I knew right away that this was a young man with a possible diagnosis of Tourette's syndrome.  He was exhibiting vocal and physical tics (involuntary or uncontrollable  vocal sounds and physical movements).  He had a great smile and he smiled in the midst of adversity and the challenge that he faced.  I admired the fact that he wanted to enjoy the church service and didn't let anything keep him from participating in an activity that he enjoyed.  My lessons learned as I started the week was: 1.  Although we may face challenges, continue to push forward and fulfill your goals, no matter how difficult.  2.  If you find a simple hairstyle that works for a few weeks, wear it and enjoy the extra time of not worrying about trying to do something different.  Life is about learning lessons, applying them to future situations, and learning to enjoy a simple hairstyle ( At least for me, as I love a good simple hairstyle:).

P.S.  As a Speech Therapist I work with people with various disabilities and syndromes and enjoy seeing and reading about people moving forward in spite of challenges.  I found an interesting article on USA Today about one of American Idol's contestants "James Durbin" that is singing in spite of his diagnosis of  "Tourette's syndrome".  According to the article in USA Today he has a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome and Tourette's.  This is really inspirational that in spite of challenges he continues to move forward and do what gives him joy.  I haven't watched American Idol in a while because I'm so busy helping the kids with homework, but I'm definitely going to have to check it out soon.  Here's the link to the USA Today article if you would like to read more http://www.usatoday.com/yourlife/health/medical/conditions/2011-03-09-tourette09_st_N.htm

Reflecting on lessons learned about life and hair,
