The Results of Pineappling Wet Hair Overnight

Recently I read an article on curlynikki.com about Tanika Ray and how she prepares her hair for the next day.  She said that she sometimes washes/ conditions her hair at night, adds her selected products and then pineapples her hair overnight.  She indicated that she likes the way her curls look when released the next morning.  Well I had the opportunity to try it last week.  I was out of town and enjoying the water parks with the kiddos so I figured I'd give this style a try.  I washed with Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Sulfate free shampoo.  Next, I conditioned my hair, and then left in some conditioner as a leave in.  Next I added my infamous coconut oil and some kinky curly curling custard (my favorite natural gel).  I squeezed the ends to remove some of the water.  Next I pulled my hair up and secured with a large headband ( pineappling).  I actually allowed my hair to dry 3 hours before bed.  I just basically went out to dinner with the family wearing this style and then watched some t.v. for an hour and hence 3 hours had passed.  My hair had dried some and it wasn't dripping wet when I went to bed.  I couldn't wait to see the results the next day.  When I woke up the next morning I took the headband off that I had wrapped around my hair as if it was a scrunchie.  I was pleasantly surprised with the results.  Here are the photos of the results:

My hair turned out nicely and it taught me that I can sleep on freshly washed/ co-washed hair if placed in a pineapple.  I'm glad that I allowed it to air dry a few hours before lying down because if my hair would have been to damp it probably would have smashed some of the curls.  I also noticed that pineappling stretched the sides and back portions so that my hair didn't draw up as much as it would have if I just let it air dry loosely.  The front is more defined and the back is thicker and fuzzier after air drying loosely.  My hair was really soft and very thick.  I'm glad to know that this is an option if it's late and I don't have time to wash and diffuse the next morning (in cool weather), or just don't have time for a braid out at night, this is definitely one more option for styling my natural hair.  Even thought it looked nice, I pulled my mass of hair back into a bun and called it a day.  One things for sure pineappling wet hair worked for me, and the style options are endless!

  1. Hi Barbara, this is Tammy. Thank you for this website. I have gone natural and it is a process, especially now that the weather is warmer it is a challenge. I look my hair and think what I’m going to do on those really hot days. I have gotten some ideas from this website.

  2. You're welcome Tammy! I'm glad that you've found some tips here. When it gets warm natural hair can get bigger and bigger over the course of the day. I love the fullness and gel is my friend in the summer. I use gel to plait my hair at night, to pineapple after a wash and go at night, or after washing in the morning and it ads extra hold to block humidity. When it's hot natural hair likes to be natural. Straight do's have difficulty holding up. Congratulations on going natural!
