I've been a natural curly haired woman for 2 years and 11 mos. Well that's the time since I cut my remaining relaxer from my hair in December 2008. I've been wearing my hair curly most of the time and I just needed to do something different. Tired of doing my hair at home and a month before my full 3 year mark of being "all natural", I decided to go and ........ get my hair flat ironed. I've been asked a few times, "Did you get a perm?". My reply, "No, I would never go back to a perm". I just wanted to try something different. Perms work for some people, but they just didn't work for me.
Anyway, I hadn't flat ironed my hair in a while. So what did I do, I headed to the salon on Friday. I've experienced heat damage in the past, and I had prepared a speech before heading to the salon. It went like this, " Can you use a conditioning shampoo on my hair? Can you roller set my hair and then flat iron?" or "Can you blow dry my hair on a cool setting?". I just wanted my hair to look nice and to look different for A change. My hubby and I had a date on Friday night and I only had 2 hours to spare to meet at our scheduled time and still have fun before picking up the kids. When I went to the salon the time crunch made me change my initial plans. The pre-rehearsed conversation changed and became something similar to this. "Can you just use a conditioning shampoo to wash my hair?" Next I asked "Can you blow dry my hair on a warm setting rather than hot?". The stylist replied "yes" to each question. He parted each section in a "u" shape before blow drying. When he sat the comb down I politely took my fingers and ran it through my waves to detangle before he took the dryer through each piece. He smiled and asked "Are you tender headed?" I said "no", "not really", just don't want to get a snag". He smiled and continued to blow dry my hair with me detangling each section with my fingers quickly before he ran the dryer through my hair. He completed the process by flat ironing my hair.
Overall, my hair turned out nicely. He said that my ends looked o.k. and didn't need trimming this time. I was delighted considering that I hadn't heat styled since last November or December and I hadn't trimmed my ends since February 2010. I think my ends are doing well because I haven't done any heat styling in a while. I'm hoping that all of my hair curls back. Even though my hair is flat ironed and will be for the next week or so, one things for sure: I'M STILL CURLY AT HEART!
