Grape Seed Oil Can Affect Your Hair, Skin, and Health

Grapeseed oil is versatile and lately one of my main oils of choice.  You know, it's that oil that goes with everything and  every style.  I went to Whole Foods 2 weeks ago and saw someone else buying this oil.  There was actually a man with a great set of locs purchasing this oil.  All I could think was it's on sale and it's now or never (LOL!).  I've seen reviews on natural hair blogs however I've never tried it personally.  So,  What did I do?  I purchased the grapeseed oil.  Here's the 411 on this oil.

Grapeseed oil is a light oil that has both emollient and astringent properties.  One of the key componets of grapeseed oil is linoleic acid, which has been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, acne, and dry skin, and can even be applied to the delicate skin under eyes.  It's reported that it won't clog pores or cause breakouts.  This oil is also high in vitamin E and it's easily spread onto skin.  I guess that explains why you may see this oil used by a massage therapist as well.  It's interesting I also remember seeing this oil listed in the past as one of the ingredients in "Iman cosmetics".  I remember thinking "Why would I want to put oil on my acne-prone skin?", however she had done her research long before I thought about looking further into the properites of grapeseed oil.

Grapeseed oil can also be used for cooking or taken as a supplement.  According to http://www.ehow.com/about_5548803_side-grape-seed-oil-extract.html  grapeseed oil may reduce high blood pressure, cholesterol, artherosclerosis, and swelling.

For me, I've applied this oil to my hair after applying my leave in conditioner and before applying a styling products such as gel.  It works wonderfully with "Kinky Curly Curling Custard" and "Eco-styler gel".  I've also used this oil to twist my daughter's hair in conjunction with some "Eco-styler gel".  Her twists held for two weeks and were shiny after getting her hair wet.  I've also been using it as a moisturizer to my skin after a bath.  It's really light, yet thoroughly moisturizing.  I must say that I'm completely pleased with grapeseed oil  as a scalp, hair and skin moisturizer.

Check out this great blog that I started reading right after I went natural.  She has some tips about using grapeseed oil to flat iron her hair.  Check out Kinky Curly Queen and scroll down to check out her December 2011 post on how she flat irons her natural hair using grapeseed oil.

Grapeseed oil can affect Hair, Skin, and Health in some good ways!

Do you use grapeseed oil?  If so how are you adding it to your hair or health regimen?

  1. Hi! I know you posted this a while ago, but I need to thank you! I was in search of an oil that could seal without making my curls look greasy and flat (I have fine low porous hair so the lighter the better!). I've just read this post and decided to give grapeseed oil a try and I LOVE the result = softness + shine. I used it as a leave in, just after my rinse out conditioner, then put a tiny bit of flax seed gel. So, THANK YOU!<3 Hugs from Paris,France(sorry for my bad English). Lou
