Today I have to review and give a shout out to "Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Souffle". It's a gel that toots its' horn for providing moisture, body, and shine. I must say that I'm not a product junkie at all, however I will try new products to see what the hoopla is about. The price was so reasonable that I couldn't forgo it while shopping at Target. I believe it was $12.00 or slightly less. Anyways here's the 411 on Shea Moisture Curling Souffle 12oz:
Visually: This gel is clear with tons of little bubbles floating about. When rubbed between two fingers there's a nice glistening that makes even my skin look moisturized with a hint of shine (hum- I wonder if those are the wonderful side effects of coconut oil and glycerin).
Tactile/ Touch: This gel has a jelly like consistency. When I rub it between two fingers it actually feels like an oil-like substance.
Smell: It smells like sweet coconuts. It's not overpowering at all, as I'm extremely sensitive to strong smells. It smells great!
Ingredients: Agave Teqilana Leaf Extract, Sugar Cane Extract, Pectin, Vegetable Glycerin, Adansonia Digitata Pulp (Baobab) Extract, Coconut oil, Shea butter, Panthenol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Vitamin E, Linseed/Flaxseed Extract, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Propietary Essential Oil Blend.
Directions from bottle: "Scoop gel into hands and distribute evenly through cleansed wet or damp hair, following conditioning. Comb through in sections with detangling comb or hands to shape curls. Style as desired, allowing some time for drying. Use on damp hair will result in looser wavy curls, on wet hair expect riotous curls. Use on dry hair to minimize fly-aways and frizz".
My View: I love "Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curling Souffle with Agave Nectar and Flax Seed Oil". I must say that I followed the directions almost to a tee. After conditioning I first finger combed grape seed oil through my hair- probably not needed because the product already has oil, however I always put additional oil in my hair. Next I finger combed the gel through my hair. Then I allowed two front sections of my hair to hang down and then gathered the back into a high ponytail and allowed my hair to airdry.
My daughter's hair was done in a similar manner, however after applying gel, I twisted 6 small twists near the front of her head. Next I gathered the remainder of her hair up using an elastic and allowed her hair to airdry.
Final Result: Curls that had great hold- not hard, not sticky, but just right. In other words a little firm in the front where I applied more gel, and completely soft and still defined in the back where I applied less gel. Our hair also had great shine and definition. This gel has replaced Eco gel for smoothing my hair when putting it into a bun. It's also replaced my shea butter mix on twists, as it's already included within the product. It provides great moisture and shine on twists. I also tried this gel on an old braidout, it gave a great amount of shine and the perfect hold throughout the day by giving me definition plus a fluffiness so desired on big hair. It was a little sticky when applied to refresh an old braidout, but the great healthy ingredients and overall look outweighed the slight sticky feel, as seen in a previous post Shea Moisture Curling Souffle To Refresh An Old Braidout. I need to do a braidout on clean hair and test the end results on that as well. For now, I'm loving this affordable souffle (gel), which worked great and me and my daughter's hair.

Has anyone else tried Shea Moisture Curling Souffle? How did you use it on your hair? and What was your result? Apply and Tell :)
Great review!! Unfortunately I used the same product and sad to say I did not have the same results. My thick course 4C hair was left feeling sticky, tacky and gummy feeling. I do love the moisture that it provides. I will try the product again, because I've had success with their other products and I would really like for this to work for my hair.
ReplyDeleteHi Anon, it does provide great moisture. Thanks for your complement on my review! I did use it once and got the sticky and gummy feeling when I used it to do a braidout on hair that wasn't washed prior to applying the gel. I didn't get the sticky feeling when I gave it another try and did a wash and go style. It worked great, actually comparable to my "kinky curly curling custard" for wash and go's. Let me know your results if you give it another try and also let me know if you used it on wet or dry hair. Thanks for your comment!
ReplyDeleteHi i found the curl soufle to work well if you apply on freshly washed hair (wet to damp) then use some curl enhancing smoothie to seal. Makes a nice soft moistrized braid or twist out. With out the stickyness.
ReplyDeleteHi Devany, I also found it to not come out sticky when applied to freshly washed (cowashed) hair. It's good to hear that the curl enhancing smoothie helped to give you a good result, and thanks for letting me know that it works on wet hair for a braidout!
ReplyDeleteYour review made me try this product and i loved it : )
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to here that you loved it. It's a great gel for hold and moisture!
DeleteWow!!! Amazing how each individual head of hair has a different texture within our community. I tried this product for the first time yesterday (I feel as if I've been missing the party) and I really like it. I'd classify my hair as type 4C (coily / matted when wet). Butters and creams do nothing for my hair so I tend to stick with gels or good old hair grease. I used this SM curl souffle on completely dry hair and got great results. My regiment for two-strand twist outs in a nutshell: (1) wash hair, add leave-in and oil. (2) Let hair dry completely. (3) Apply hair grease (usually from 99 cent store) and a 'dab' of souffle to each section. (4) Twist each section (usually 13 or 14 twists total). I was pleasantly surprised by the souffle. It gave me great twists with definition, and quite a bit of shine. This has quickly become my HG!
ReplyDeleteHi Anon, It's great to hear that you got such a good result on dry hair. It really does yield great results on twists and braidouts. I love the moisture and shine that it gives. I'm glad to hear that you joined the party! LOL!
DeleteI have that in my hair junkie collection but I am yet to use it. With 4c hair that has thin strands I am excited to see how it will work. What I do own and love is the smoothie from the same line.
DeleteThanks for the post going to crack open the jar soon!
