This post is all about the infamous wash and go. If you've ever heard someone ask another person the following questions, you might have overheard a conversation related to the "Wash and go". 1. How did you get your hair to do the curly look? 2. What products did you use? 3. Wait a minute now, " What's a "wash and go"?
Well here's the 411 on my wash and go technique. Keep in mind that wash and go is a method of washing/co-washing the hair and then applying products and allowing the hair to air dry into a natural curl pattern.
Products
- Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner ( conditioner or leave in conditioner of choice)
- Coconut oil or grape seed oil (oil of choice)
- Kinky curly curling custard (gel of choice for hold)
Directions
- On freshly co-washed hair, finger comb conditioner (used as a leave-in) through hair in sections.
- Next finger comb oil through hair in sections.
- Then finger comb gel through hair in sections.
- Flip head over and while leaning forward rake gel through back sections of hair
- Hop back in shower and do a quick cool water rinse. I say rinse but I really stick my head under the shower quickly to seal the cuticle of my hair and to allow my curls to form more spirals after having finger combed all those products through. Some people do the rinse before applying products, however this works for me.
- When out of the shower shake head side to side to help curls form even more.
- Optional: use a microfiber towel to lightly squeeze down length of hair to absorb extra water that may drip down later.
- If your hair has a looser curl pattern in the front, part hair into 3 sections ( 2 sections that hang in front and one larger section in the back).
- Secure larger back section near the top of the head with an elastic. This will stretch the roots of the back section so that the length looks more uniform in the wash and go state.
- If hair is all the same length all the way around, then feel free to let hair hang free after applying products.
- Allow hair to air dry.
- Wear hair as is or release hair in elastic and wear all hair out.
Tips
Every one's hair is different and looks different in different styles, and with different products. If the wash and go doesn't yield the look that you're going for be assured that there are other styles that can help you achieve a similar look to wear the hair out. Experiment with braidouts and twistouts, which are achieved by wetting hair, applying products, braiding or twisting hair, air drying, and then releasing braids/twists prior to wearing hair out.
What products do you use for your wash and go? How often do you do a wash and go? Do you cool water rinse? And if so do you do rinse before or after applying products?
I hope that you enjoyed the video tutorial! **Educating and sharing a lesson on how I style the curly, wavy, and kinky hair that I was born with.**
How does your hair feel after doing this? Is it hard from the gel or does re-wetting it in the shower help prevent the hardness from the gel?
ReplyDeleteHi givingthoughtgivingsight, My hair actually feels really soft in the back and a little more firm in the front. I don't use a ton of gel so it doesn't get hard. I do tend to apply a little more gel to the front because my curls are wavier and that section has a slightly firmer hold but not super crunchy hard. Rewetting probably does help with that, I never thought about rewetting and the effect on the overall feel after applying products. I just do it to seal the cuticle and to encourage shine ( that's what was being stated on a lot of online blogs when I first went natural) and if it's not broke I haven't tried to fix it. :)
ReplyDeleteHave you ever had a problem with the grapeseed oil reacting badly with the KCCC?
ReplyDeleteHi Patrice. No I haven't had an issue with the grapeseed oil reacting badlly ith KCCC. I tend to have success mixing Kinky Curly Curling Custard with either grapeseed oil or coconut oil. I typically use one or the other. I have had problems when I tried to mix olive oil with KCCC, as they didn't mix well. The result of mixing olive oil and KCCC yielded white lint looking balls throughout my hair. So in short, grapeseed oil worked great for me when combined with KCCC.
