Protective styles such as flat twists or braid outs have been my way of nurturing my natural hair the past few weeks. The weather has been cold and snowy in Chicago. We got 12 inches of snow on this past weekend. The schools were shut down, and when that happens in the Chi, you know that the weather is bad. This hardly ever happens here.
Cold winters can also mean dry hair issues. I've been trying to add as much moisture to my hair as possible. Flat twists are such a simple and quick low manipulation style. I actually created this style on freshly washed hair. I moisturized my hair with a DIY shea butter, olive oil, and castor oil mix. I started by parting my hair down the middle and from ear to ear. I then formed two flat twists on the sides with the 2 front sections. I then twisted 2 additional flat twists on each side towards the back, if that makes sense. I secured my hair with an elastic, and then wrapped the twists into a bun and pinned them with bobbi pins. I left this hairstyle up for 3 days. I misted it with Cantu comeback curl, then applied the shea butter/ olive oil/ castor oil mixture to my hands and gently patted it into my hair. I promise I thought that I had taken a picture of the back of this style, but I didn't. LOL! I'll redo it soon and make sure to include a pic of the back. Here's a view of my hair before pulling it back into an elastic.
