The Results of using Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor Protein Treatment

Good morning curlies.  I wanted to share my results from a protein treatment and deep condition that I did on Thursday evening.  Be sure to keep reading because I'm going to show you my resulting hairstyle below.  I hadn't cowashed since Christmas eve, so this past Thursday made 2 weeks.
My hair was crying to be drenched in water, as this is the first time that I've ever gone this long between co-washes (part of my new years resolution for 2011).  I decided to use aphogee's keratin 2 minute reconstructor for my light protein treatment.  I actually had the shampoo on hand because when transitioning from permed to natural I did the heavy aphogee protein treatment, the one that you leave on until it gets hard.  I definitely didn't want to go through that process.  I grabbed the shampoo, which did have some mineral oil and a cone in it and decided to just try it anyway.  (I don't typically use shampoo with sulfate, however I had used a gel with cones and figured that I needed to remove them, but in hindsight the shampoo had cones to- oh well- maybe I'm getting a little more lax after 3 years of a strict no cone regimen).  Here's what I did:
Step 1:  I washed my hair with the aphogee deep moisture shampoo.
Step 2: Next I applied the 2 minute keratin reconstructor in sections while finger combing it through.  Then I took my large tooth comb and combed it through (This probably took me 5 minutes).
Step 3: I placed a plastic cap on my head and let it sit for 7 minutes (The directions say 2 minutes and 5 minutes for damaged hair).
Step 4:  I rinsed it all out with water.

Next I decided to make up a concoction to deep condition my hair.  This is how I proceeded:

Step 1: I first parted my hair in sections and applied and finger combed suave naturals juicy green apple conditioner through my tresses.
Step 2: Next I finger combed coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, and castor oil through my hair.
Step 3: I covered my hair with a plastic cap and sat under the hooded dryer for 15 minutes on medium   heat.
Step 4: I quickly placed my head under the shower stream for a blast of cool water to rewet rather than focusing on rinsing my hair (I figured these are products that I typically leave on my hair so why spend the time reapplying them all after completely rinsing them out- so I call this a rewet/ quick rinse).
I decided to do a braidout in this order:
Step 1: I applied shea butter and olive oil to each section, combed the products through using a large comb ( I typically use my denman brush, but again I'm trying some new things this year) and then platted my hair.
Step 2: Once I completely plaited my hair into 8 plaits, 4 on each side, I applied castor oil to the ends.
Step 3: Placed a "peach colored perm rod roller" to the ends of each plait.

This is the resulting hair style and how I did it:
Step 1: I unraveled my braidout.
Step 2: Next I used my fingers to pull a piece of hair down on the right side to create a right side bang.
Step 3: I grabbed remaining hair and secured it using an elastic.

Overall result: Highly moisturized and shiny hair.  I love it.  The best thing about all of this is I don't have to do my hair today which is Saturday.  Neither do I have to do my daughter's hair today because I'm stretching styles to every 2 weeks and her twists were done last weekend.  Yeah! a free weekend- Not.  It's time to clean the house, and help my 8 year old twins with their weekend homework packets.  Oh well!  I can't win them all!!!

  1. Hi Barb,

Very pretty results. Your hair is so shiny and well defined. My hair is protein-sensitive. I tried the Aphogee two-minute reconstructor before but didn't see any benefits. My hair was a little hard even so I did a deep moisturizing conditioner afterwards. Oh well.

  3. Thanks Tam. I know right, at least you gave it a try. I was skeptical about trying this to, because my 1st year completely natural my hair just didn't like protein, at least not from gels and products with protein after using them over time. That's why I had to let my IC fantasia gel take a break after year 1. My hair was just dry so I've been avoiding proteins for a while. I'm glad this treatment worked though.

Thanks svrbrownsuga. Let me know how your results turn out.

  4. I first purchased the Aphogee Keratin Treatment in a sample size a few months ago and I loved it. The sample size (it says) is good for two treatments, but I have very thick hair and only got one small use out of it. I loved what it did for me! I've been dying my hair once or twice a month (yes I know it's bad for my hair, but I like to do it) since I was thirteen or fourteen and I'm almost twenty-two, so my hair is generally in pretty bad condition. I've used just about every protein treatment there is, but this is the only product I've found that actually makes my hair look healthy. I got some shine back, my hair has way less breakage and even my scalp feels so much better. Even if your hair isn't as damaged, I think this will be a great product for most people.
My only problem, really, is with the packaging. The treatment is very thick and I generally have to shake and tap the bottle quite a bit to get any of the product out, but the payoff is worth it.
