Blow Drying And Dusting My Daughter's Natural Hair

This is a co-wash, wash, blow dry and trim that I did on my daughter's hair on New Year's Day.  I took down her braided mohawk and thought up a style to keep her hair maintained for the next 2 weeks.  I'll post that soon.  In the meantime here's what I did to her hair.  I co-washed her hair ( conditioner wash).    Then I applied more conditioner and detangled with a large tooth comb and then put some more conditioner in as a leave in.  Next, I applied a small amount of coconut oil through her hair and then twisted her hair into 8 large twists.  The twists allowed her hair to air dry while I was grabbing items for dusting, which is trimming a small portion off of the ends of her hair.  So, basically I grabbed a round brush and my hair trimming scissors.

Before dusting the ends of her hair I unraveled each twist.  I then took a round brush and blow dried each section on warm air.  The last time that I put heat on my daughter's hair was 2 years ago for Easter Sunday.  I roller set her hair and then flat ironed and trimmed her ends.  I rarely apply any direct heat to her hair.  Since it's cold outside, when not trimming I will most likely allow her hair to dry in twists or puffs while sitting under the hooded dryer on low.  In the summer I allow her hair to air dry, however Chicago weather with the cold and wind doesn't allow much air drying this time of year.

During her hair styling session on New Year's day we counted in Spanish, said "A-B-C's" in Spanish and I allowed her to  play her DS game to keep her occupied.  She didn't complain at all.  The fact that I allowed her twists to airdry some means that it only took a minute to blow dry each section.  I didn't flat iron her hair before trimming this time though.  I just pulled it taught and trimmed 1/2 inch off horizontally.  Then I took the strand , combed through it, and held it side ways and lightly dusted each section.  I loved the pic above which is how her hair looked post trim.  When stretched it's still below APL (arm pit length) as it was before her trim.  Below is a picture of her hair stretched right after washing.  It's amazing how natural hair shrinks.  No one would ever guess that her hair is this length if seen immediately after washing.  Now the ends of her hair look healthy in the natural state and those straggly ends are gone.  It's amazing that my mom never trimmed my ends as a kid.  My hair grew pretty long, as when younger it was roller set on occasion and other than that it was just worn naturally.  I've even learned that since being natural I can get away with not trimming for 10 months if I keep my hair moisturized and limit flat ironing and excessive heat use.

Here's a pic of my daughter's wet hair stretched out immediately following conditioning.

I'll post pics of her new braid style soon!

Do any of you trim your child's natural hair at home?  If so, how often?
