Hey curlies! I've been using henna for the last few years to color my gray strands around the front middle section of my hair. I had a bad experience in the following sense. Last week after wearing my hair flat ironed I decided that it was time to wash, deep condition, and let my curls pop. When I went to look under the cabinet I was out of henna. Nooooooooo! I had nothing but amla left. I ended up keeping my hair flat ironed, which maintained itself for 5 weeks, 35 days to be exact.
Anyway, for those of you who are familiar with henna ( Lawsonia inermis) it's a natural plant powder that when applied to dark hair it shows slight auburn to reddish undertones in sunlight. My natural hair is very dark, however when henna is applied to my gray strands they turn fiery red. I then follow up with indigo powder (think about the color used for blue jeans) and wallah! red and blue makes black. Well let me tell you the two specific reasons that I associcated a nightmare with henna.
1. I ran out of henna at a time that I really needed to get my hair done and get those roots touched up.
2. In the past I had some henna in the refrigerator and I kept thinking that a family member was going to throw it out thinking that it was some bad food. Look below at the picture of my henna in the fridge around Christmas time. Yep right between the ketchup, eggnog, and cheese dip. Yep this fear definitely qualifies as nightmare #2.
It's no longer a nightmare, because my henna came in the mail on yesterday, and it's sitting on my hair as I type. The photo at the top is a pic of my henna'd roots, with the remaining hair hanging down. I put conditioner and castor oil on the portion of my hair that doesn't have henna, and then pulled the back portion that doesn't have henna up into a bun and secured with an elastic. Then I pulled the ends of the portion with henna on the roots, and wrapped the ends of my hair around my bun. I tied a grocery store bag around my head, and then placed a shower cap on top (only because I realized that I'm out of saran wrap- oh well I had to improvise).
I love henna because I can leave it on overnight. In the morning I'll rinse my hair, add some indigo for at least 45 minutes and style my curls accordingly. It's the weekend baby and my henna nightmare is over. I'm henna'd up and my curls are dreamy!
