Winterizing Windows and Natural Hair
Hey curlies, I had to share how I winterize my windows and my hair when the weather starts to get cold. I'll start with my window. I have a huge window in my bedroom and even though I purchased my home as a new construction over 10 years ago, there has always been a draft of wind that gets through. It's weird because my bedroom is the largest bedroom in the house and it's also the coldest and draftiest room in the house. My hubby and I purchase the Frost King window kit for extra large windows every year to remedy this problem.
It's really easy to install. The kit comes with double sided tape to attach around the perimeter of the window seal. Once the doublesided tape is attached, you cut the plastic to the size that you need for your window. Next, remove the top layer protecting the top of the double sided tape. Then press the plastic film onto the double sided tape. The last step is to use a hair dryer on high heat setting to go across the plastic to shrink it and remove wrinkles. This year we made sure that we pulled the blinds up and out of the way. Last year we applied the plastic, and lo and behold realized that we had left the blinds down and closed. Oh well, there went our winter's view from our bedroom window. LOL! We got it right this year though!
As for my hair, when it's cold I don't cowash 3-5 days a week as if it's summer. Since the weather is in the 30's and 40's, I don't do many wash and go's. I do more braidouts in the fall and winter months. This just means that I wash my hair in the evening and then braid it into 8 braids and then unplait in the morning. I do change the products used sometimes, as this winter I've been skipping the gel and just using suave naturals as my leave-in conditioner, coconut oil or grapeseed oil, and shea butter. Without applying gel my hair dries faster, like within 2-3 hours. I do have to rebraid every night or every other night to maintain the definition and decrease fuzziness though, however I feel like my hair likes these oil baths in the winter because my skin and hair is drier in the fall/winter anyways. My hair appreciates the increased moisture, and my wallet appreciates the reduced heating bill!
Do you winterize your windows and your hair in the Fall/ Winter? What do you do differently compared to in the warmer months?
*Here's a video that I did a while ago on "How To Do A Braidout" if you need to see the basics for braiding your hair for a braidout. Enjoy!
Thanks! It really works. Amazingly we can feel the difference as soon as we get the kit up. On windy winter days I'm also grateful for this plastic because it redirects that cold and drafty air on those days as well.
Great idea! We really need to do something about our drafty windows too.
