1. How long have you been all natural (without any chemicals remaining in your hair)?
I have been all natural since April 2007.
2. Speak about who or what inspired you to go natural.
I can't say there was any one thing that inspired me to go natural. It was a transition that evolved from me wearing hair extensions, wigs and braids. Instead of perming my hair at every rest period (the time between me taking my extensions out and putting some more in) I just kept it washed, conditioned and rebraided or "rewigged".
3. What are your top 2 hairstyles since going natural?
My 2 top hairstyles since going natural are the 2 strand twist and the afro puff (ponytail).
4. What's your weekly routine and 3 favorite products used on a weekly basis?
My weekly routine is to co-wash (no-poo) my hair. I only use shampoo on my hair once a month. (I found that shampoo dried out my hair and it took an additional week to recover from the shampoo). After I co-wash, I deep condition with whatever conditioner I have available. (My name is Terri and I am a product junkie...lol). Than I do a two strand twist. I have used many products, but I have found that Shea Moisture products (I saw an ad for it on Curly Nikki’s site) give my hair much needed moisture and it feels incredibly soft.
5. What's your current length?
My current length (when blow dried) is past my shoulders.
6. Speak about your biggest supporters since going natural.
My biggest supporters since going natural have been my sister Nicole and my girlfriend TJ. My sister is the research guru and she is always sending me information on new products and sites and she has even traveled to a natural hair show. My girlfriend TJ is the one who talked me out of going back to the creamy crack (perm) on more than one occasion when I was in the early phases of growing my hair out. Both are natural now, with heads full of thick healthy hair.
7. Did anyone discourage you along your natural journey? If so how did you stay focused on your goal?
I wouldn’t say people discouraged me, I would say I received the looks of what are you going to do with that. Also whenever I two strand twisted my hair, people would say...”Oh...I like your hair so much better that way!” I guess it was tamer in their eyes.
My hair never grew past the bottom of my neck (I didn’t even think it could), however when I left my hair alone (stopped perming it) I have found that God blessed me with a head full of beautiful hair. I stayed focused on my hair journey simply by wanting to keep my hair on my head. Lol When I permed my hair, I would lose it; it would break off and I would have scalp sores. Now that my hair chemical free, healthy and growing, I have no desire to alter or change what its doing. I leave my hair alone and it stays put on my head...lol.
8. Name one hairstyle and/ or product that you would like to try?
Wow!! I have to think about this one. Since I have tried so many products, I would have to go with a sample pack of Miss Jessie’s (shampoo, conditioner, curly meringue, etc). In regards to hairstyles I would like to find a product that would bring out my wave pattern when I brush my hair back into my puff or ponytail. I still haven’t gotten any waves in over 4 years...lol
9. If you could speak to people in a word or sentence to describe "Why going natural was a great decision what would you say? Speak to me!!!!
Going natural for me was freedom and an acceptance of who I am. Every strand is a distinct reflection of who God individually, uniquely and awesomely made me to be.
Terri's hair is absolutely beautiful! Her "twist out" stood out in a crowd. If I was to describe Terri's hair, three words come to mind: "Awesomely Lush Spirals". I also enjoyed chatting with her because she can talk about hair all day as well! Natural hair is beautiful!
